Homestay Program Spotlight: Tung Dap Village
It is only fitting to recognize Tung Dap Village Homestay program on Koh Phrathong Island as an outstanding and unforgettable experience. Awarded the winner of the 2016 Top 100 Sustainable Destinations, this village offers not only a cultural eco- experience but also a journey of sustainability, allowing guests to truly see the value in low impact travel!
The village is showing extreme enthusiasm and confidence after winning the award. More villagers are showing interest in joining the homestay group and they are coming up with new ideas.
Why is this Village So Amazing? I can give you 3 reasons!
Homestay host Noi spent the first 24 years of her life as a sea nomad, and offers a fascinating account of her time living on a “Kabang,” which is a boat that serves as a home and a means of transportation for Moken people. Visitors to Tung Dap have the opportunity to learn firsthand about Moken culture and traditions through hands on activities like net fishing, picking local vegetables to make a garden to table meal, and making a tasty Thai snack.
Grab a pair of binoculars, eco- guides, local guide and hop on the back of the local tractor to explore and learn about the Savannah, Swamp and Beach forest eco-systems that have a plethora of Flora and Fauna that will truly amaze like wild orchids, Sambar deer and the white paper bark tree! Guests may even spot the very rare endangered Lesser Adjuntant bird that looks prehistoric and can stand as high as 120CM. The villagers also like to share their mangrove ecosystem and guests have the opportunity to help plant mangrove saplings when in season.
Simple, Beautiful and Quaint
It is no secret that Tung Dap village takes guests to another time, opening their eyes to the simple joys and beauty that is found from connecting with people and nature! Whether they are drinking from a coconut on the pristine beach, resting in Pi Noi’s bamboo house, strolling through the Savannah or stomping through the mangrove forest… it is certain that the memory will last forever!
