Hands On Tours

Accessible from any hotel in the region, including Phuket, Khao Lak, Khao Sok, and Ranong

Activities can include:

  • Mangrove reforestation
  • Teaching English to tour guides or school children
  • Beach clean-up and waste management
  • Helping at a local orphanage
  • Creating hiking paths and nature trails
  • Light construction and maintenance projects at local schools
  • Planting an organic garden

Not everyone can get away for months at a time, yet increasingly people want to make a genuine contribution to the communities they visit when they travel abroad. For these people, Andaman Discoveries has created hands-on tours that provide short but authentic experiences that can fit into even the most rigorous travel schedule.

The projects in our hands-on programs are community-led and focus on sustainable community development and environmental conservation. We work closely with our field coordinators and villagers to ensure that the projects serve an actual community need. For this reason, the activities that we offer change frequently depending upon local needs at the time. Please contact us to enquire about current opportunities.

We can offer project-oriented tours from two- to seven days. Previous projects have included mangrove conservation; teaching English to children, homestay hosts, and tour guides; beach clearance and waste management; or building a new library for a local school. No specific skills or experience are required; however, we ask that participants be willing to work hard, keep an open mind, and have an enthusiastic attitude. We welcome people of all ages — our youngest participant was seven years old!

We offer a very supportive service (especially for worried parents!) in a safe and secure environment. Our Thai-speaking staff will be with you throughout your time in village to make the most of your experience. Our hands-on tours are suitable for:

  • Regular people wanting a different type of holiday
  • Those who want to volunteer but have limited time or budget
  • Travelers to Thailand who want to escape the touristy areas
  • People of all ages and backgrounds
  • GAP year adults and students wanting to travel and experience local culture
  • Parents who want their son or daughter to experience the world in a safe and supportive way
  • Groups or individuals looking to fund or assist on a particular project
  • Those wanting to give something back to local communities during their visit to Thailand

Andaman Discoveries has an extensive network of contacts, partners, and experts in the region. If you have a particular skill you would like to share, or a specific project you would like to fund, we can help locate and organize a suitable project with the villagers. For example, eleven students from the University of Birmingham's International Volunteer Society raised funds to assist with mangrove reforestation in tsunami-impacted habitats with local youths along the Andaman Coast.
