Become a Volunteer Tourist
Volunteer English Teacher in Ban Talae Nok Village
Volunteering is a great way to make a positive contribution to the lives of the villagers and really engage with them as people work together on a community-led project. The tsunami volunteer placement was awarded one of the top 50 "Trips of a Lifetime" by the National Geographic magazine in October, 2006.

We understand that nowadays people are looking for a more meaningful travel experience and want to 'give something back' to the communities which they visit. Volunteering on a community-led project is the ideal way to do this.

However, not everyone has the time to volunteer for several weeks or even months. Here at Andaman Discoveries, we believe that everyone deserves the chance to volunteer and help out, so offer short-term placements on projects, for even as little as a day. Everyone has something to offer and no specific skill set is required. The only requirement is to be open-minded with a "have a go" attitude. We welcome people of all abilities. Long and short-term placements include:

• Mangrove reforestation University of Birmingham
• Teaching English to children, adults, guides, host families and handicraft cooperatives
• Teacher placement in local and village schools
• Sharing your skills or hobby with villagers
• Creative workshops with local children
• Habitat rehabilitation
• Beach clearance and waste management
• Light construction work
• Teaching community aerobics, yoga or your hobby
• Piloting and providing feedback on new tourist activities
• Working on community or school gardens
• Interpretive nature trail data collection with local guides
• Hospitality training with host families and tsunami handicraft cooperatives
• GPS land-use mapping
• Wildlife and environmental conservation projects
• Community service opportunities
• Orchid conservation

Sign Making in Ban Talae Nok Village

We work very closely with our field coordinators and villagers to ensure that projects serve a real need in the community. Projects are community-led and focus on sustainable and relevant community development and environmental conservation.

Andaman Discoveries has an extensive network of contacts, partners and experts in the region and if an individual or group has a particular skill they would like to share or a particular project they would like to help fund, we can help locate and organize a suitable project with the villagers. For example, eleven students from the University of Birmingham's International Volunteer Society raised funds to assist with mangrove reforestation in tsunami-impacted habitats with local youths along the Andaman Coast.

We offer a very supportive service (especially for worried parents!) in a safe and secure environment. Field staff will be with customers during their time in village. They will have access to Thai-speaking International staff that will be on hand to help you make the most of their time volunteering or visiting the village. Our volunteer placements are suitable for:

• People of all ages and backgrounds (youngest volunteer to date: 7 years old!)
• Regular people wanting a different type of holiday
• People with limited time or budget
• Families looking for something fun and educational for the kids
• GAP year adults and students wanting to travel and volunteer
• Parents who want their son or daughter to experience the world in a safe and supportive way
• Groups or individuals looking to fund or assist on a particular project
• University, study and educational groups
• Travelers to Thailand who want to escape the touristy areas

Andaman Discoveries as a non-profit travel and community development service seeks tourism interns and specialists to volunteer with our team to assist in development and marketing. We ask for a minimum of three months commitment.
